Know More About Microfiche And Microfiche Scanners

By Paulette Mason

Microfiche or which is commonly known as microphotographs is a type of microform which is a term used to define a miniature copy of a file or a document. A microfiche is made of film, which is thin and small in size. Because of this attribute, microfiches are commonly used in large establishments to preserve documents without needing to expand their space. Today, there are several ways for you to digitalize it. One way, is by using microfiche scanners.

As we all know, most museums have documents that need to be preserved. Because of this, they prefer fiches to be their primary way of storing these documents compared to the digital ones. This is because the digital ones do not hold enough data that can be stored in a longer duration of time.

Since it is micro, this cannot be viewed by just inspecting it with your eyes. For you to be able to access or observe the content of a fiche, you have to utilize a specialized machine for that sole purpose. This machine will magnify the micro document for you to be able to see its content.

Optical scanners are used today to view the content of a certain fiche. The machine will scan through it and send the result to the computer. The computer then analyzes the content and is automatically converted.

The most popular conversion format is PDF. There are also some who used to convert it using TIFF which an image type format. Some said, printing out one fiche will create multiple pages of PDF or TIFF on the computer.

Nowadays, modern computers need a certain kind of software to install for you to be able to use it in a way you want it to. In contrary, micro photographs have specific machines that only function to read micro images without installing software, updates and license keys. This makes it a lot more convenient to use than a computer.

Most microforms are made up of a polyester material which images are printed on. This material is stable enough that if kept in a well managed temperature can last up to five hundred years or so. That is way too far off from CD ROMS that we have nowadays, which can only last for a hundred years maximum.

If you are concerned about longevity and safeness of your data, then a fiche is a good choice to store it. Since fiche is not digital, this means that it cannot be damaged by viruses. This helps preserve information for a longer period of time and is secured enough compared to cloud servers or any other type of digital storage. What you only need to think about is ensuring that the fiche where you save your data is properly kept.

No matter what you choose on how you want to store your important documents, be sure that it safe enough and can last long. If it is a digital format, then you have to make sure that it is backed up on a separate storage space or stored in a cloud server. But if you are using a fiche to securely save your data, then make sure that it is stored in a good room temperature as well.
