You need to be a very caring person. A patient comes in scared and unaware of what the replications are. It is up to you to make sure that they are calm and relaxed so that their anxiety doesn t result in any further damage. They may not be able to speak to you but they can hear you and your voice and words are the only comforts that will have at the time.

For many people, being in this environment can be stimulating and is one of the reasons why they stick to it. Every day is a new challenge and an opportunity to learn new things and also to learn about yourself. You are able to teach yourself how to react better and by doing this, you will also leave with fulfillment. You will be able to go home at the end of the day knowing that you achieved something new.

In this profession, you get to meet new people every day and care for more than one patient at a time. This way, you are not becoming attached to one person and you are providing your service to as many as you can. It also means you are in control of what they consume so that their health is fine and they recover to the best of their ability, with your support.

You will meet strong-willed people who will, in turn, make you a stronger person. They are all qualified and professional which means that you have the support when you are in the room. It also means you have a team to fall back on as well as the ultimate support system during emergency surgeries.

An attribute that you will need to have is not having to plan ahead and do the same things each day. It will not happen in this way when you stay in this profession. In fact, some have to perform duties to fill space when staff is short and this means you would need t adapt rather fast when the time comes. This will teach you the lesson of making do with what you currently have and doing it to your best ability. At that moment, you would need to break down the situation and make it work. Analyse everything around you and see how you can make the situation work. This learning you can take back to your personal life too.

Once qualified, you will get a chance to work with students. They will come into the hospitals as interns and will be looking to you for advice and learnings. This is your way to pass on the knowledge that will determine whether they will become good at their job. Your words will have an impact on how they react and look at situations. It is up to you to be the teacher and the motivation.

If your plan is to continue in this profession, make sure that you are determined to be a giver of life and a receiver of grief. You need to stay strong and maintain the right balance to be able to cope.
